When Atë Strikes

Above a muted battlefield—
steep, perpetual push.

A mother—
Herculean,
embracing a breathing boulder—
then another—

She heaves—
teeth clenched,
scabs scraped,
sweat smeared
across her path.

Her tears—mirrors
black cats crossing—

when—

Atë strikes—

She slips—
stones rumble,
roll—
one by one—
over her.

Will she rise,
or exhale
into oblivion?

  1. Look at you with those Emily Dickinson M-dashes transporting readers the sublime. Love it!
Also, just for you from “The Iliad”: “For Ate is strong and fleet of foot, wherefore she outstrips all prayers and arrives first at any man’s heart to do him harm, and the prayers follow after to heal the harm.”

    1. This is one of the best compliments a poem can receive. Thank you.
I started this poem a while ago, hoping to finish it by Mother’s Day, but life had other plans for me 😦 You picked up on many things I thought would resonate, but you also completed circuits I didn’t intentionally wire. Even the Emily Dickinson-style dashes weren’t conscious on my part, and I wasn’t thinking about men while writing it. That’s one of the beautiful surprises of poetry, isn’t it? Thanks again. 😍
